Akron, OH – The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) proudly celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of Eleanor Heller, a recent graduate of the agency’s Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program. Eleanor’s journey is a powerful example of how determination, guidance, and opportunity can help individuals build pathways to stability and independence.

Eleanor joined AMHA’s FSS program in 2021 after relocating to Akron from Jacksonville, Florida. When she entered the program, she was uncertain about her career direction but deeply passionate about helping others. Through hard work, persistence, and a deep sense of purpose, she found her calling in the healthcare field—providing compassionate care to seniors and veterans.

Over the course of four years, Eleanor made consistent progress toward her goals. Through the FSS program’s escrow savings component, she increased her personal savings by more than 1,200%, a testament to her commitment and steady income growth. The program, which allows participants to build savings as their earnings rise, empowered Eleanor to take control of her finances, improve her credit, and prepare for homeownership.

Along her journey, Eleanor achieved major milestones including reinstating her driver’s license, completing homebuyer education and credit counseling, paying off debt, and raising her credit score to over 700. In 2025, she proudly launched her own business, Tapioca Jones, LLC, which will continue her work supporting veterans—a cause close to her heart.

“Eleanor’s story captures the true spirit of the Family Self-Sufficiency program,” said Herman L. Hill, Executive Director, AMHA. “Her resilience, determination, and care for others demonstrate how this program helps residents not only achieve financial stability but also discover their potential and purpose.”

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program at AMHA helps residents of public housing and participants in the Housing Choice Voucher program set and achieve goals toward self-sufficiency. Participants work closely with a service coordinator to develop individualized plans focused on employment, education, financial literacy, and asset building. As their earned income increases, a portion of the rent difference is deposited into an escrow savings account—funds that become available upon program completion.

Eleanor’s success represents more than just financial growth; it symbolizes the power of community support and personal perseverance. “This program changed my life,” Eleanor said. “It gave me the tools and confidence to build a better future for myself and my family.”
