Community leaders highlight the importance of early childhood education in breaking down barriers and building brighter futures

Akron, OH — 8.19.25 —The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) proudly celebrated the graduation of more than 70 young children today from its SPARK (Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids) program. This milestone marks not only the success of these children and their families, but also the power of early childhood education to transform lives and strengthen communities.

The celebration reflects AMHA’s broader vision: a community where all people have access to health, education, and employment opportunities to position themselves out of poverty.

“Early childhood education is a game-changer,” said Herman L. Hill, Executive Director of AMHA. “When children start school ready to learn, they are more likely to thrive academically and socially. Programs like SPARK give our families hope, stability, and opportunity. None of this would be possible without our incredible community partners who believe in this mission and invest in the future of our youngest learners.”

Through year-to-date 2025, AMHA’s SPARK program has served 131 children, providing individualized support to ensure they are prepared for kindergarten success.

AMHA expressed deep gratitude to the GAR Foundation, Akron Community Foundation, and many more philanthropic and community partners whose support makes programs like SPARK possible.

“Investments in early childhood education are investments in the future of our community,” said Christine Mayer, President of the GAR Foundation. “We are proud to support AMHA’s work to create brighter futures for children and families across Summit County.”

John Garofalo, President of Akron Community Foundation, added: “This graduation is a testament to the dedication of families, educators, and partners coming together to ensure children have the tools they need to succeed. National research consistently shows that children who receive quality early education are more likely to graduate high school, secure stable employment, and break cycles of poverty. The connection between education and housing stability is especially critical. As a housing authority, AMHA provides not just affordable housing, but also wraparound services that strengthen families and communities.
